What differs

Base & packages

Both use APT with DEB packages, and Pop!_OS 24.04 records an Ubuntu 24.04 base with the Pop!_Shop as a graphical front end. Their snapshots differ by one base generation: Ubuntu 26.10 carries GCC 16.2, glibc 2.44 and LibreOffice 26.8.1, while Pop!_OS 24.04 carries GCC 15.2, glibc 2.42 and systemd 259.

Desktop & display

Ubuntu ships GNOME 51 and has dropped the X11 session entirely in 26.10. Pop!_OS ships its own desktop recorded as GNOME 49.2, maintained by System76, with its own installer in place of Ubuntu's. Both record Wayland as the default session.

Release model

Ubuntu published 26.04.1 on 20 July 2026 and 26.10 on 15 October 2026, with kernels 7.0 and 7.3. Pop!_OS's newest entry is 24.04 on 11 December 2025 with kernel 6.18.2, preceded by 22.04 on 25 April 2022 with kernel 5.17.7 — a much slower cadence.

Hardware requirements

Pop!_OS lists 4 GB of memory and a 2,818 MB ISO; Ubuntu lists 6 GB and 6,309 MB. On a 4 GB machine only Pop!_OS's recorded floor is satisfied.

Init & immutability

systemd on both, at 261 for Ubuntu and 259 for Pop!_OS, with neither marked immutable. Each installs a writable root, so the difference in behaviour comes from the desktop and installer rather than from the system model.

Verdict

Choose Ubuntu if you want the newest Ubuntu base, the largest pool of instructions written for it, and GNOME 51 with no X11 fallback. Choose Pop!_OS if you want a lighter image and a 4 GB memory floor, a desktop tuned by a hardware vendor, or an installer that does less asking. If you already run Ubuntu and are happy with it, Pop!_OS offers a different desktop rather than a different platform.
