Pop!_OS vs Fedora

Both ship a modern GNOME desktop on a 4 GB memory floor, and they take different routes to it. Pop!_OS 24.04 builds on Ubuntu with a System76-maintained GNOME 49.2 and kernel 6.18.2; Fedora 44 builds on RPM with GNOME 50, kernel 6.19.10 and a much newer toolchain.

What differs

Base & packages

Pop!_OS records an Ubuntu 24.04 base with APT, DEB packages and the Pop!_Shop, at GCC 15.2 and glibc 2.42. Fedora records DNF with RPM, GCC 16.0, glibc 2.43, LLVM 22, Golang 1.26 and GDB 16.3. Fedora's toolchain is the newer of the two, and it is the one that feeds the enterprise line.

Desktop & display

Pop!_OS ships GNOME 49.2 as maintained by System76, with its own installer and the Pop!_Shop for software. Fedora ships GNOME 50 with Evolution 3.60.0 and installs through Anaconda. Both record Wayland as the default session.

Release model

Pop!_OS's newest entry is 24.04 on 11 December 2025 with kernel 6.18.2, preceded by 22.04 on 25 April 2022 with kernel 5.17.7. Fedora published 43 on 28 October 2025 with kernel 7.2 and 44 on 28 April 2026 with kernel 6.19.10, so its releases arrive more often.

Hardware requirements

Both state 4 GB of memory. Fedora's image is smaller at 2,615 MB against 2,818 MB, a difference small enough that neither system has a practical advantage on installation media.

Init & immutability

systemd 259 on both snapshots, and neither is immutable. Both install a writable root and boot through GRUB, so the difference lies in the desktop build and the package toolchain rather than in the platform.

Verdict

Choose Pop!_OS if you want an Ubuntu base with a vendor-maintained desktop, the Pop!_Shop, and a system tuned for laptops. Choose Fedora if you want the newer GNOME, current compilers and kernels, and an RPM workflow that matches enterprise tooling. Both ask for 4 GB and neither is immutable, so the decision rests on packaging and on how often you want new releases.
